THEY IMITATE TO ESTABLISH DEMOCRACY

Today the Armenian parliament discussed draft amendments to the regulations of the National Assembly which involve enhancement of powers of the parliament opposition. The chair of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs David Harutiunian said the bill is aimed at defining the role of the opposition and increasing its constructive role in the parliament. The bill also regulates the opposition’s involvement in the election of the chairs and deputy chairs of the parliament committees.
The parliament opposition gets the right to present extraordinary questions to discussion, as well as priority in asking questions to the government.
The draft amendments were signed by Republican David Harutiunian, ARF Dashnaktsutiun member Armen Rustamian and BHK Leader Gagik Tsarukian.
Armenian parliamentarian Vardan Bostanjian wondered whether the fact that the executive body doesn’t recruit non-partisan specialists doesn’t soil the Government’s reputation. “The Government is comprised of people who have assumed responsibility.”
In reply to Zharangutiun MP Larissa Alaverdian's question whether today's parliament reflects the real ratio of forces of the political domain, Harutiunian said: “It is self-evident that voters determine the next parliament through a general election every five years. The changes of the political domain will find their reflection in five years’ time. In 2007 as a result of a recurrent election people formed a parliament while the party you are affiliated with didn’t even dispute the election outcome.”
