MANANA ASLAMAZIAN’S CLAIM SATISFIED
The Constitutional Court of Russia satisfied the claim of “Educated Media” Foundation President Manana Aslamazian, who was accused of smuggling foreign currency into Russia. A criminal case was launched against her after she failed to declare the cash of 9.5 thousand EUR that she brought into the country from Paris in January, 2007. The thing is that according to the Criminal Code any currency over 10.000 USD must be declared at customs.
Such cases usually deserve administrative punishment but a criminal case was launched against Aslamazian.
The Constitutional Court arrived at the verdict that the clause of the Criminal Code preventing the transfer of over 10.000 USD was illegal and did not meet the requirements of the RF Constitution. As a result Manana Aslamazian’s case was sent for further investigation.
Reminder: “Educated Media” Foundation is the successor to “Internews Russia” that played a key role in the development of the country's independent media.
