SIGNS OF VIOLENCE ON TWO PRISONERS
Fifty-four people are presently under preliminary detention for using violence against the authorities and provoking mass disorders in the city of Yerevan. Head of the Armenian Helsinki Commission Michael Danielian’s attempts to visit the detainees were a complete failure. As Mr. Danielian informed “A1+” only the public control observers’ group of the Justice Ministry is allowed to visit prisoners and detainees after March 1 events.
“Since March 4 we have been regularly visiting the detainees. On the whole they do not complain of the treatment they get; they mainly criticize the interrogators who contribute to the extension of the detention terms”, Michael Baghdasarian, head of the public control observers’ group of the Justice Ministry informed “A1+”. He also noted that during the visits they had met only 3 prisoners with signs of violence on their bodies.
“We could see signs of violence on Mushegh Saghatelian and Davit Matevossian. There were scars and injuries all over Saghatelian’s body, whereas Davit Matevossian had injuries only at the head.”
Michael Baghdasarian could not recall the third prisoner. As he informed “A1+” some of the detainees also complained they were not allowed to have a lawyer.
