SECOND CONGRESS IS DUE MAY 2

“The second congress of the political forces and NGOs supporting Levon Ter-Petrossian is due at a Government hall on May 2. The congress was to be held in Tbilisi if the Armenian authorities didn't provide a hall to the opposition,” says Manushak Petrossian, member of the central headquarters for Levon Ter-Petrossian.
“We have requested the city administration to allot a hall many times. The refusal is undoubtedly politically motivated. The Government yielded after the Popular Movement reached an agreement to hold the congress in Tbilisi, she added.
The authorities realised that in case the congress was held in Tbilisi it would find deep resonance. Besides, a congress beyond Armenia's borders would stain their reputation.
The congress will dwell on the recent events and discuss the further steps of the popular movement. It will feature more than 20 political forces and NGOs. Manushak Petrossian says that the number of forces which have come together around Levon Ter-Petrossian has significantly increased compared with the first congress held in December of 2007.
“The political forces supporting the first President have notified the City Hall to sanction a rally for 26 times. All their notifications have been turned down. “We have disputed most decisions at the Administrative Court but the latter did not repeal them,” said Manushak Petrossian.
The City Hall bans rallies on the basis of the amendments to the Law on conducting meetings, assemblies, rallies and demonstrations.
