Members of the Armenian Communist Party (HKK) no longer salute HKK leaders with warm applauses. The 37th plenum of the HKK Committee was held in a heated atmosphere. Some HKK members left the hall during the debates. Communists demanded their leaders to give assessments to the March 1 tragic events. They wondered why the party hadn’t joined people on March 1.
According to HHK second secretary Frunzik Kharatian, the delay of a HKK announcement with regard to the March 1 events was determined by the state of emergency. He noted that the party would second people in case “they take their case to the street again.”
“The party administration explains their silence by the state of emergency. I think that communists were late with their statement. When innocent people were severely beaten and killed, the HKK did nothing. Regardless of the Party’s decision I shall back people. A communist must be fair and just and serve a good model for people,” says communist Julietta Stepanian.
“Communists should thank Levon Ter-Petrossian for awakening people from a nightmare. Today, when people have already sobered up, each of us should think of his mistakes and misdeeds,” she adds.
She advised communists to review their working style, change mentality and keep abreast with the times.
“Probably, HKK administration fears the acting authorities, therefore, the party doesn’t act adequately. Ordinary communists seem more active today than the party leaders. I was with people on March 1 and I still back people. There were some communists among those subjected to violence on March 1. They went to the square as RoA civilians and not as HKK members,” said communist Petros Manukian, who was among the first to leave the hall.
