While President Robert Kocharian was attending the opening ceremony of North Avenue with a number of Armenian top-leveled officials, a group of civilians demanded to mete out justice in Armenia.
Former residents of North and Main avenues were waiting for the President at the intersection of Tumanian Street and North Avenue. But the meeting failed thanks to “assiduous” work and “painstaking” efforts of red-hats and police.
We have greatly suffered from the authorities’ anti-constitutional decisions. We urge you to have a close look at at the avenue “built on our tears and blood.” Most of the flats of the avenue belong to government members,” the Chairman of the “Victims of State Needs” NGO Sedrak Baghdasarian said.
The demonstrators weren’t even allowed to have a brief glimpse at their former dwelling places.
We have neither chained the streets nor broken the public order. Why can’t we share their “exultation,” the demonstrators said.
Meanwhile, Robert Kocharian was wandering along North Avenue and admiring modern buildings. All of a sudden, a woman elbowed the crowd to pose a question to the President. The latter made a sign to security services to force the woman off the avenue.
Later on, while speaking of the protest act, the President said “the demonstrators are free to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. In case the court finds the compensation inadequate we are ready to consider the matter on the legal level.”
