LET’S CLEAR OF MINES NOT TO BE MINED

A year ago the UNO Chief Assembly announced April 4 the “International day of mine awareness and mine combat assistance.” According to the data of the UNO 15 - 20 thousand people die of mine explosions every year. In the framework of the UNO humanitarian mines clearing program the Ministry of Regional Government presented the works implemented in Armenia within a year.
The budget of the Armenian mine clearing program is 1 540 000 EURO. The budget of last year was 645 346 USD. “10 years ago we even encountered the problem of highway mine clearing in Yerevan, Meghri, Yerevan – Kjark, etc.” The military side of the matter is already solved. Today the problem is to avoid further mining and mine clearing,” said the Vice-Deputy of the Ministry of the Regional Government Vache Terterian. 5 of the Armenian 11 marzes contiguous to Azebaijan are mined.
The survey of the last year revealed that there are 102 dangerous territories in Taush, Gegharkunik, Ararat, Vajots Dzor and Sjunik, 60 communities which have 394 sufferers from mine explosions. According to the statistics there are 69 thousand people in Armenia subjected to mine explosions. The mine clearing is realized in the Armenian borders acknowledged on the international level.
Only Artsvashen was not observed as it is under control of the Azeri soldiers. Mr. Terterian could not definitely say which measures are being taken by the international organizations and the Azeri Government for mine clearing.
